In a major push for rural drinking water infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned a ₹1,400 crore water grid project at Vijjeswaram, under the umbrella of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). This ambitious project aims to purify water from the Godavari River and distribute it through a network of pipelines, reaching 924 villages across various mandals, including Undrajavaram, Peravali, Chagallu, Kovvur, Tallapudi, and areas of the former West Godavari district.

The project has been structured in phases: the first phase will cover 854 villages in segments such as Narasapuram and Tanuku, while the second phase will extend to an additional 165 villages, including Unguturu and Eluru regions.Under the scheme, water will be drawn, treated at Vijjeswaram (located near Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage), and sent through pipelines to address long‑standing drinking water scarcity in the Godavari region.

Jointly funded by the State and Central governments, this grid system is intended to tackle salinity and contamination issues in groundwater and provide sustainable access to potable water. With improved infrastructure and execution, the Vijjeswaram water grid is expected to significantly enhance rural water security, reduce dependence on erratic borewells, and support public health in vulnerable communities.
