Andhra Pradesh’s government is gearing up to launch a landmark free bus travel scheme for women, allocating 75% of the APSRTC fleet to this initiative beginning August 15, 2025. As part of its Super Six welfare promise, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered issuance of zero‑fare tickets clearly showing origin, destination, and full subsidy to enhance transparency and awareness.
To support anticipated demand, the state plans to induct 2,536 new buses—ideally electric AC vehicles—with an investment of around ₹996 crore. The move also mandates GPS tracking in all buses and upgrades to stations, including improved cleanliness and passenger amenities.
The scheme aims for a surge in women’s mobility, with projected yearly rides rising from approximately 49.9 crore to 88.9 crore, a 78% increase in female ridership. While boosting access to education, jobs, and healthcare, the scheme raises concerns about operational sustainability. Projections indicate a revenue loss of ₹100–250 crore per month, depending on whether benefits are limited to intra‑district travel or extended statewide.
APSRTC staff unions and transport officials have flagged issues including inter-district jurisdiction, fluctuating occupancy rates, and workforce strain. Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to delivering this key component of its public transport and women’s empowerment agenda.
