The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 106 additional postgraduate (PG) seats for government‑run medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, the state’s Health Minister announced. The approval covers 11 government medical colleges, including both newly established ones and older institutions.
Of these, five newer colleges received 60 of the seats, while the remaining 46 were allotted to established colleges across the state. The specialties include critical branches such as general medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, anaesthesiology and radiology. With this move, the state’s total PG medical seat capacity in government colleges rises to around 1,763 seats (alongside four diploma programmes) for the new academic year.
Healthcare officials say the expansion is designed to address a growing demand for specialist doctors in Andhra Pradesh, boost medical education infrastructure and enhance training opportunities within the public health sector. The expanded seat matrix also signals stronger alignment between the state and central governments to meet regulatory norms, equip government medical colleges with faculty and facilities, and bring more students into PG training in key clinical fields.
