The government of Andhra Pradesh has launched a major digital effort by giving 5G smartphones to over 58,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers. Each device costs ₹12,500, bringing the total program cost near ₹75 crore. Officials say these phones will help staff deliver services for mothers, infants and children faster and more reliably.
Until now, many field-level tasks — like tracking child growth, nutrition support, and welfare records — were done on paper. With smartphones, workers can now update data instantly and track families’ eligibility for services in real time. This will likely improve transparency and reduce delays in delivering benefits.
The initiative covers workers at more than 55,000 Anganwadi centres across Andhra Pradesh. The government hopes this digital upgrade will make welfare schemes more effective and reach more families quickly.
This move marks an important step in modernising public health and child welfare services. By equipping frontline workers with reliable tools, AP aims to strengthen early childhood care, maternal support, nutrition delivery, and real-time monitoring — making services smoother for millions of residents.
