APSPDCL Clarifies: Smart Meters in Andhra Pradesh Will Not Add Consumer Costs

The APSPDCL has formally dispelled misconceptions surrounding the rollout of smart electricity meters in Andhra Pradesh, stating unequivocally that consumers will not incur additional charges during installation or billing. CMD K. Santosh Rao confirmed that the project is fully financed under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and approved by the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission in February 2021.

He clarified that neither installation nor monthly billing will feature extra costs for smart meter users. Instead, smart meters enhance billing transparency, enable real‑time consumption tracking via the official app, and send timely usage alerts—empowering consumers to better manage electricity usage.

To support consumer confidence, APSPDCL is conducting awareness campaigns explaining the features and benefits of smart meters. The initiative targets commercial and government services initially, before expanding to high-usage residential connections. Consumers can call the dedicated toll‑free number 1912 for questions or help.

This reassurance aims to counter public fear that smart meters could unexpectedly raise electricity bills. APSPDCL emphasizes that the transition to smart metering is a value-add for consumers, not a cost burden.
