In Telangana’s Karimnagar district, the Burugupalli gram panchayat has passed a first-of-its-kind resolution to provide funeral services at a nominal cost of ₹1 for villagers. This bold move was approved at the first meeting of the newly elected panchayat council, led by Sarpanch Dulam Kalyan Kumar. The scheme aims to help poor families who often struggle with high burial or cremation costs.
Under the plan, when a resident of Burugupalli village dies, the gram panchayat will arrange the funeral and cover all related expenses for a symbolic charge of just one rupee. Officials say this will reduce financial stress on families during their time of loss and ensure dignified rites for every villager, regardless of income.
This service is believed to be the first such initiative by a village panchayat in rural Telangana, even though similar schemes exist in urban areas like nearby Karimnagar city. The resolution reflects growing focus on community welfare, rural support systems, and affordable funeral services in local governance.
Residents welcomed the decision, saying it brings dignity and relief to families facing emotional and financial burdens during bereavement.
