The leading South Korean online retailer, Coupang, has confirmed a huge data leak affecting about 33.7 million users. Personal info including names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses and some order details were exposed. Payment information and login credentials were not compromised, the company says.
According to Coupang, the unauthorised access began around June 24 and used overseas servers. The breach went undetected for nearly five months before the company identified it on November 18. Initially, it reported only a small number of affected accounts — but later revised the figure to 33.7 million, covering nearly all its past and present users.
A former employee — reportedly a Chinese national — is suspected of the leak, raising serious concerns about the firm’s internal data security. Coupang’s CEO publicly apologised and pledged full cooperation with investigators. A joint government-industry task force has begun probing whether the company violated data-protection regulations.
Security experts warn that even though payment details were safe, exposed personal data can fuel identity theft, phishing and other frauds. Affected users are urged to stay alert against suspicious calls or messages.
