The India Meteorological Department is tracking a growing cyclonic system in the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to develop into Cyclone Montha by October 27. It is forecast to make landfall near Kakinada on the coast of Andhra Pradesh, likely on the night of October 28 or early October 29, with sustained winds of 90-100 km/h and gusts up to 110 km/h.
Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu are already on high alert. The IMD has issued red and orange warnings for many affected areas and urged fishermen to stay away from the sea from October 26 to 29.
In Andhra Pradesh, the chief secretary has directed district officials to activate control rooms, prepare cyclone shelters and ensure uninterrupted power and network services. Meanwhile in Odisha, authorities aim for zero‐casualty and have mobilised relief teams, and stockpiled essentials in vulnerable coastal districts.
The storm could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal and interior zones between October 27-29, increasing the risk of flooding, landslides and rough seas. Residents are advised to secure loose objects, follow evacuation orders, and avoid travel during the alert period.
