Disney and OpenAI Strike $1B Deal

The Walt Disney Company has reached a landmark three-year agreement with OpenAI that will let fans create AI-generated short videos using Disney’s iconic characters on OpenAI’s Sora video platform. As part of the deal, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and grant licensing rights for more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars.

Under the partnership, users will be able to type simple prompts into Sora to generate short clips featuring beloved figures such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Simba, Ariel, Cinderella, Lilo and Stitch. Disney says the deal will help fans engage with its stories in new and creative ways, while protecting creators and ensuring responsible use of AI technology.

The licensing pact does not include actor likenesses or voice use, meaning videos created by the AI will not feature real actors’ voices or faces. Disney also plans to use OpenAI technology, including ChatGPT, within its own products and services.

Executives from both companies say the agreement sets a new standard for how entertainment brands can work with AI. The first licensed fan-generated content is expected in early 2026, expanding how audiences interact with favourite characters and stories.
