Severe flooding along the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh has forced authorities to shut all major bathing ghats and prohibit devotees from entering the river to perform ritual baths. In Vijayawada, ghats like Durga, Bhavani and Punnami have been barricaded, and loudspeakers warn pilgrims to stay away from fast‑flowing waters. To ensure religious observance is not disrupted, officials are installing temporary shower facilities near the riverfront so that devotees can still cleanse before visiting temples.
The decision comes as inflows into reservoirs and downstream barrages reach critical levels, making river currents unpredictable and dangerous. Residents in vulnerable island and low‑lying areas are being evacuated or advised to stay indoors. Security personnel, disaster management teams and local administration are coordinating to monitor water levels continuously and issue real‑time alerts.
Despite the disruption to customary river bathing rituals, authorities insist the safety of devotees is paramount. With river floods intensifying, proposals are also underway to erect permanent safety barriers, install warning signage, and regulate access during future high‑flow periods. The state government has urged people to cooperate, stay informed about flood updates, and avoid venturing into the river until conditions stabilize.
