Mogalli Ganesh, a respected name in Kannada literature and folklore studies, has passed away at 62 in Hospet due to multiple organ failure. He had been battling health issues for some time. Ganesh was a professor and head of the Department of Folklore Studies at Kannada University, Hampi. At the time of his death, he also served on the syndicate of Karnataka Folklore University.
Born in the village of Santemogenahalli in Channapatna taluk, Ganesh rose from modest beginnings to become a powerful voice in regional writing. He earned master’s degrees in economics and folklore, and completed a PhD that focused on village deity culture in Karnataka. Over a career spanning decades, he published acclaimed story collections like Buguri, Atte, Mannu, and Devara Daari. His novels include Thottilu, Hokkulu, and Bittuhoda Manushya. Several of his works have been translated into other languages.
His contributions earned him honors including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy award and other accolades. Ganesh is survived by his wife and three daughters. His funeral rites are scheduled in his native village. The world of Kannada writing mourns the loss of a major literary force, particularly in folk and Dalit narrative traditions. His unique voice and commitment to storytelling will be deeply missed.
