The Telangana High Court refused to grant interim relief to GITAM University after its electricity was disconnected for non-payment of ₹118 crore power dues. The court said the power connection would be restored only if the university pays 50% of the outstanding amount first. The disconnection came after the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) cut the supply because the massive arrears were not cleared.
GITAM University said it was facing problems because 8,000 students were affected by the power cut. The university’s lawyers argued that the dues belonged to VBC Ferro Alloys Ltd, a related company, not the university, and should not be charged to GITAM. The court did not accept this argument and pointed out close links between the two entities
Earlier, the High Court criticized the power department for not acting sooner, even as the huge arrears built up over many years. Notices were sent but strict action was delayed. The court has asked the case to be heard again on December 24 and made it clear that any relief will depend on partial payment of the dues.
