General Motors and Hyundai Motor Company have announced a landmark strategic partnership to co-develop five next-generation vehicles for launch in 2028. This marks Hyundai’s first major vehicle development partnership and aims to enhance competitiveness amid mounting pressure from low-cost Chinese EV manufacturers.
The collaboration includes four vehicles tailored for Central and South American markets—a compact SUV, compact car, compact pickup, and mid-size pickup—all engineered to support internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. GM will lead development of the mid-size truck platform, while Hyundai takes charge of the compact vehicle lineup.
Crucially, the partnership also includes co-developing an electric commercial van targeted at the North American market, where Hyundai currently has limited presence. The production estimate for these joint models is ambitious—exceeding 800,000 units annually once full scale is reached.
Beyond shared vehicle platforms, the alliance encompasses joint sourcing, logistics, and exploration of low-carbon steel usage to drive cost efficiencies and sustainability. The deal builds on a framework agreement signed in September 2024 and highlights both companies’ drive toward efficient automotive innovation across regions.
