Hyderabad suffered a sharp rise in road accidents in 2023, logging over 9,000 crashes across the city. Many crashes involved two‑wheelers, overspeeding, and poor traffic management, with junctions turning into accident hotspots. The evening hours proved especially dangerous for commuters.
Several factors contributed to this spike. Overspeeding remained one of the main causes. At traffic junctions, weak signal control, blocked U‑turns, lack of clear road markings and enforcement led to frequent collisions. In residential and commercial zones, chaotic traffic patterns and disregard for rules made minor roads deadly.
Fatalities also rose alongside crashes. Pedestrians and two‑wheeler riders were major victims, as infrastructure failed to protect these vulnerable users. Even potholes and roadworks added to the danger on busy stretches.
Officials now warn that urgent reforms are needed in road safety, traffic enforcement, and urban infrastructure. Clearer signage, smart traffic signals, stricter speed checks, and safer junction designs are essential. The public, too, must adopt safer driving habits and obey traffic rules. Without swift action, Hyderabad’s roads will remain zones of risk and tragedy for everyday commuters.
