Kantara: Chapter 1 is the much-awaited prequel to the hit 2022 film Kantara. Rishab Shetty returns as lead and director, diving deeper into the origins of the Kantara universe.
The makers have introduced Gulshan Devaiah as Kulashekara, marking his debut in Kannada cinema. In a royal first look poster, he is seen in regal attire, wearing a crown and sitting on a throne.
The film is set in pre‑colonial coastal Karnataka, weaving folklore, spirituality, and ancestral conflict. It explores Buta Kola rituals and the deeper mythos behind the original narrative.
Produced by Hombale Films, the movie is slated for October 2, 2025 release across seven languages—Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, and English. The creative team includes cinematographer Arvind S. Kashyap and composer B. Ajaneesh Loknath.
With Kantara: Chapter 1, Netflix and Hombale aim to expand the mythological world of Kantara, bringing a richer origin story to fans across India.
