The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially appointed Khalid Jamil as the full-time head coach of the Indian men’s national football team, sealing a two-year contract with an optional one-year extension based on results. Following an agreement to part ways with Jamshedpur FC, Jamil will begin his tenure with a training camp on August 15 at Bengaluru’s Dravid-Padukone Centre for Sports Excellence.
In the immediate calendar, his first challenge will be the CAFA Nations Cup, where India faces Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan in the group stage. Later, Jamil will guide the team through crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Singapore in October.
Jamil becomes the first Indian coach to lead the national team since Savio Medeira (2011–12), marking a historic return of domestic leadership at this level. He brings extensive experience from the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League, having managed clubs such as Aizawl FC—whom he led to a remarkable I-League title in 2016–17—as well as Jamshedpur, NorthEast United, and the Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
AIFF has clarified there will be no dual coaching roles, meaning Jamil will fully dedicate himself to the national team. His appointment underscores a renewed commitment to indigenous coaching talent, backed by AIFF leadership including IM Vijayan and Subrata Paul.
