The Madras High Court has ordered the producer of Rajinikanth’s animated film Kochadaiiyaan to pay ₹2.52 crore within four weeks in a long-running legal battle. The court said if he does not pay the amount, he could face six months in jail in the case linked to a bounced cheque.
The legal dispute began when the producer took a loan for post-production work on the 2014 film. He repaid part of it with a cheque of ₹5 crore, but that cheque bounced because of a stop-payment order. Later court proceedings found that ₹1.26 crore was still owed. The high court then doubled this amount as a penalty and set the deadline for payment.
The High Court’s order highlights the serious consequences of issuing a bounced cheque and failing to meet financial commitments, especially in the film industry. The producer contested his debt, saying he had already paid much of it, but the court confirmed the conviction. The ruling underlines legal accountability in loan repayment cases and may affect how film loans and post-production funding disputes are handled in future.
