The India‑made Nissan Magnite compact SUV has dramatically improved its safety credentials, achieving a 5‑star Global NCAP rating for adult occupant protection, and 3 stars for child safety, following a series of major safety upgrades. This places the Magnite as the first vehicle in South Africa to earn such a rating under Global NCAP’s updated testing protocols.
Originally launched with just two airbags, the Magnite initially scored only two stars for both adult and child protection. Nissan took swift action, introducing a comprehensive safety package that includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), three-point seatbelts for all seats, pedestrian protection enhancements, and improved seatbelt restraints. These measures elevated the score to four stars, and after further refinement, earned a full five-star adult rating.
The SUV delivered a strong 32.31/34 adult occupant score, reflecting superior performance in both frontal and side impact tests. For child safety, it achieved 33.64/49, with higher marks for the 18-month dummy and some head protection concerns for the 3‑year‑old dummy in frontal impacts. These results underscore the Magnite’s commitment to safety and its evolution from a modest performer to a segment leader in crash protection. With these credentials, the Magnite positions itself as a compelling choice in the compact SUV category for safety-conscious buyers.
