SBI’s Goal: Increase Female Representation in Bank Staff to 30% in Five Years

The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced a target to increase its female workforce to 30% by 2030. This is part of a broader push to enhance gender diversity across all levels. Currently, women make up about 27% of total staff, though in frontline roles their presence is higher—around 33%.

To reach this goal, SBI is introducing several woman‑friendly policies. These include creche allowances for working mothers, and special training programmes for women returning from maternity leave, sabbaticals or long sick leaves. The bank is also running “Empower Her”, a mentoring and leadership lab programme to groom more women leaders.

Health initiatives are part of the plan—breast and cervical cancer screenings, nutrition support for pregnant employees, and vaccination drives. SBI is also expanding its all‑women branches (over 340 already) to encourage women’s participation.

SBI has more than 2.4 lakh staff—one of the biggest workforces in the banking sector. The bank says its goal is not just more numbers, but creating a work environment where women can thrive at all levels.
