The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has commissioned a new high-performance computing system named Tarang HPC to enhance tsunami warnings and ocean observation services. This upgrade will help scientists run advanced models for tsunami early warning, ocean forecasts and extreme ocean weather predictions more accurately and faster.
Tarang HPC is based at INCOIS in Hyderabad, Telangana, and is designed to support complex real-time ocean modelling. It uses powerful computing technology to process large amounts of data from ocean sensors, satellites and sea buoys. This helps INCOIS improve early warnings for tsunamis, storm surges, high waves and other coastal hazards. The system also supports forecasting for ocean state changes that are important for safety at sea.
INCOIS operates India’s Tsunami Early Warning System and provides ocean advisories to governments, fishermen and coastal communities. The new computing facility will help deliver faster, more reliable alerts, giving more time for preparedness and response along the Indian coast and across Indian Ocean rim countries.
This technological upgrade marks a major step in strengthening India’s ocean disaster readiness and real-time ocean data analysis capabilities.
