Tata Motors Climbs to No. 2 Spot in Car Sales; Maruti Drops in September 2025

In a major shift in India’s auto market, Tata Motors has become the second-largest carmaker in passenger vehicle sales for September 2025. The company recorded a 45.3% year-on-year growth, driven largely by the recent GST reduction that made cars more affordable. Tata Motors has now overtaken both Hyundai and Mahindra, marking a strong comeback and rising demand for its cars and SUVs.

Industry experts say Tata’s wide range of EVs, SUVs, and value-for-money hatchbacks attracted more buyers during the festive season. The company’s focus on safety, design, and technology has helped boost customer trust and brand loyalty.

Meanwhile, market leader Maruti Suzuki saw a surprising 8.4% decline in domestic sales, hinting at shifting buyer preferences and rising competition in the entry-level and mid-segment space. Hyundai also fell behind, losing its long-held second spot.

The GST cut acted as a key trigger in reviving buyer sentiment across the industry, but Tata Motors clearly benefited the most. Analysts predict Tata’s upward momentum may continue in the coming months if it maintains innovation and competitive pricing.
