In June 2025, India’s wireless subscriber base expanded by 2.46 million, reaching approximately 1.17 billion. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) attributed this growth to strong urban demand, as urban wireless subscriptions rose from 634.91 million to 637.87 million (+0.47 %) while rural subscriptions slightly dipped from 533.51 million to 533.00 million (–0.10 %) .
In the wireless mobile segment, numbers climbed from 1,161.03 million to 1,163.03 million, reflecting 0.17 % monthly growth. Urban mobile subscriptions increased from 630.42 million to 633.14 million, while rural mobile subscriptions edged down marginally from 530.60 million to 529.88 million . The overall wireless tele-density rose modestly from 82.63 % to 82.74 %, and urban mobile tele-density increased from 124.91 % to 125.31 %, whereas rural tele-density declined from 58.90 % to 58.82 %.
Private telecom operators continued to dominate with approximately 92.2 % market share, while public sector providers like BSNL and MTNL held just 7.8 % . The number of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers rose from 7.40 million to 7.85 million, with a majority in urban areas, signaling ongoing demand for next-gen connectivity .
Urban expansion remains the primary driver of subscriber growth, though closing the rural connectivity gap remains an ongoing challenge. India’s telecom sector continues to scale, led by major players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, reinforcing the country’s digital backbone.
