The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued an urgent public advisory to combat a growing surge in fraudulent telecom scams involving impersonation of the regulatory body. Scammers pose as TRAI officials in calls or SMS, claiming your mobile number will be deactivated within hours due to alleged misuse or Aadhaar-linked illegal activities. These fraudulent messages often create a false sense of urgency, prompting victims to press numbers, share Aadhaar details, or comply with bogus instructions.
TRAI emphasizes that it never contacts users directly via calls or texts regarding service disconnection, billing, KYC compliance, or legal actions. Only telecom service providers—not TRAI—are authorized to initiate such communications. Users are advised to remain cautious and verify any suspicious communication by contacting their official service provider directly.
Victims are strongly encouraged to report fake calls or messages promptly using the Department of Telecommunications’ Sanchar Saathi Chakshu portal or through the Ministry of Home Affairs cybercrime portal. By staying vigilant, avoiding pressing unsolicited IVR options, refusing to share sensitive information, and reporting dubious contact, individuals can safeguard themselves from identity theft and financial fraud. This TRAI advisory underscores the importance of not falling prey to phishing attempts disguised as authority mandates.
