Madurai welcomed a new landmark in sports as MS Dhoni inaugurated the Velammal Cricket Stadium. The stadium, developed by the Velammal Educational Trust with support from TNCA, cost around ₹325 crore. It sits on approximately 11.5 acres near Velammal Hospital on Chinthamani Ring Road.
Though initially built for 7,300 spectators, the stadium is designed to expand its seating to 20,000. Facilities include an international standard pitch, LED floodlights, practice nets, a gym, players’ lounge, media & VIP areas, and a highly efficient drainage system that clears water in just 10 minutes.
The stadium is expected to host TNPL, Ranji Trophy, and possibly IPL matches in future. Dhoni also interacted with students, played a few overs, and expressed hope that the new venue will support the growth of cricket in Tamil Nadu’s interior regions.
This move shifts focus from just metropolitan cricket hubs, giving opportunities to talented youth in Madurai and nearby districts. The project raises the bar for sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, bringing world‑class standards closer to regional centres.
